Berchtesgaden, Germany / Salzburg, Austria / Hallstatt, Austria

One of my best friends, Lauren, and her husband, Dirk, traveled from Colorado to Iceland to say "I do" and adventure around for a week. They then caught a flight south to spend time with our family and come along on a mini-trip to Austria with me and Brecken. The car was packed full, giving the impression that all on board would be taking a lengthy trip. The reality being that we were only going to be gone for three days. But hey, my ability to travel light doesn't come natural and is nearly impossible by the time I pack enough for the littlest lad in the group. Dirk and Brecken were backseat bros and nodded off throughout the drive or played games on their electronic devices. Lauren was my conversational co-pilot, leaving minimal dead air in-between us during the four hour drive.

Our first stop was Berchtesgaden, Germany. A town in the Bavarian Alps located just across the border from Austria. Surrounded by majestic mountains and crystal clear creeks and lakes, this area boasts natural beauty. While the scenic landscape alone is enough to lure travelers here, many tourists actually stop in this region to visit Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" or go deep into the ground to experience the salt mines. With limited time, we chose to go into the salt mines, thinking this would be more fun for Brecken. After purchasing tickets for the tour, we dressed in our mandatory mining jump suits and rode a train deep into the dimly lit, cold, underground. The best part of the tour was the wooden slides and a boat ride on the mirrored lake. Brecken was half terrified of the slide, as you can see in the picture below. His immediate response after we came to a halt at the bottom of the fast slide was, "mommy, I go home now." Discovering the salt mines was an educational thrill that gave us ample information and amusement without being another mundane tour.

We made it to Abtenau, Austria where we rented and apartment on the farm of Johann and Petra. I pulled into the driveway and was unsure as to whether or not we were at the correct address. Johann walked towards our car, smiling, waving, and greeted us with a jovial Grüß Gott (may God greet you). Our stay on his organic farm was a slice of goodness.

One day of our trip was spent in Hallstatt and the other day in Salzburg. Staying in Abtenau set us in-between both of these locations and amidst green fields, grazing cows, and a backdrop of brilliant mountains. The small town of Hallstatt sits along the calm waters of Hallstatt Lake. Wooden homes line the town giving it a charming appearance. There is an allure here; tourists seeking an escape from the bustle of everyday life to seek out a place that represents storybook features. To get the best views of this town, glide along the water in a rented electric boat or take the funicular up to an overlook.

Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the filming location for the famous musical, The Sound of Music. We parked near the Mirabell Gardens and slowly made our way through the gardens and onto the bridge spanning the Salzach River. Standing on the bridge my eyes gazed upwards to the clifftop fortress perched high above the old city. Church bells rang, classical music wafted through open windows, and horse hooves clopped through the cobblestone streets as carriages carried tourists here and there. Weaving through streets we ended up on the famous, Getreidegasse, easily recognized by its tall, narrow buildings with wrought iron signs. A small city with a slow-paced speed, Salzburg is lovely and quite manageable for those on a tight time schedule.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany

A four day weekend took us to the Bavarian Region of Germany to unwind from our hectic life and reconnect as a family. The Bavarian Region is home to some wildly beautiful scenery and its mountainous terrain is comparable to that of Colorado. Which, of course, still feels like home to us and a place that we sincerely miss. The destination we were basing ourselves out of was Garmisch-Partenkirchen, an idyllic town nestled at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak.

Our weekend was going to be one of outdoor adventure mixed with naps. We had six specific points of interest we hoped to see, 1. Fairytale and animal park for Brecken's enjoyment 2. Ettal Abbey 3. Zugspitze 4. Lake Eibsee 5. Partnach Gorge 6. Oberammergau Alpine Coaster. Upon entering the fairytale land, it felt as if we were launched into the past. Children rode ponies and a miniature train, viewed animals ranging from peacocks and sheep to bunnies and turtles, peeked into fairytale displays, scaled wooden playground sets, and drove bumper cars. It was simple and sweet. As we left the park, we decided to drive directly to the Ettal Abbey, an active monastery with beautiful Baroque style art and architecture. This monastery is unique in the fact that the monks operate their own brewery and distillery. Shocking right? These monks know what they are doing because they've been successfully brewing beer for the last 400 years!

The next day we purchased tickets for the Zugspitze at our hotel and departed early to beat the crowds. A cable car took us from the base to the top of the mountain. Once at the top, we gazed at mountain peaks from four different countries with a panoramic view like no other. Another short cable car ride gained us access to the glacier area where Brecken and Alex took a ride on a little sled. My shoes had zero tread so I didn't even attempt sledding down for fear I wouldn't be able to walk back up the hill! We shared hot chocolate and soft pretzels at a picnic table in the sun while we waited for the train to transport us down the hill to Lake Eibsee. Once at the Eibsee, we ate a German lunch on a patio overlooking the water and took a walk around the shoreline. The water sparkled various shades of green and blue as sun rays beamed down on its surface. Our nature lovers day ended at the Partnach Gorge. We walked an elevated path along the water, secured by a double rope railing. The narrow path weaved in and out of dark, wet caves, making us duck and dodge along the way. The water roared loudly as it made its way through the canyon. Waterfalls cascaded down the mountainside and the mist blew on our faces. Brecken reached his hands up in the air to catch the droplets of water dripping from the rocks and chuckled each time one landed on his hands.

The final must-do on our trip to this region was riding an Alpine coaster. Children under the age of three are not permitted to ride the coasters. Now, let me tell you, I don't enjoy lying and I am not good at it. It pains me to do so and can be seen written all over my face. I desperately wanted B to ride the coaster with us so we didn't have to take turns. I knew safety wise he would be ok since he would be on a seat between Alex and secured with a belt. With that being said, I fibbed to the lady at the desk and told her I needed a ticket for two adults and one child. She spoke to me in German telling me that she didn't think he appeared to be three. I quickly responded saying he definitely was and that he's just small for his age. The blankie and thumb sucking don't help him. She gave me the tickets and off we went. As we rode the ski lift to the top, my conscience kept nagging at me. Alex could tell I felt anxious and told me the polizei were probably waiting for us at the top to escort my lying ass back to the parking lot. The coasters were SO much fun, albeit the woman ahead of me was riding her brake too much, causing us all to forgo a wild ride with more speed. Brecken loved riding the coaster with Alex and seeing his excitement made me happy that I was able to weasel his way onto the ride!

Accommodations

Edelweiss Lodge and Resort This is an American resort located on the military base in Garmisch and available to military members stationed or TDY in Europe. On our previous trip to Garmisch, Alex and I stayed at a great German hotel downtown. We decided to try out this resort since the rates were cheaper than those on the economy during the month of August. The resort was great in every aspect and we really loved eating pizza, wings, nachos, and onion rings while watching the Olympics on big screen tv's in the restaurant pub.

A little bit from December

Has December really come and gone? There's so much excitement, prepping, and anticipation around Christmas and then wham, it's over. I'm so eager to get the decorations out and the tree set up and as soon as Christmas is over, I'm like, let's get rid of the tree, I can't stand it in my house any longer. It had been five years since I spent Christmas with my Mom. Gosh, just the thought of her and I sipping coffee together and watching B open presents Christmas morning made me SO HAPPY.

I miss her. Some days I think about what life would be like if we lived in the same town. Well, maybe not that close, but, a short drive away. We could meet for lunch on a whim, she could have her grandson over for sleepovers, and my husband and I could go on a date night here and there, because, grandmas always want to babysit, right? Those thoughts often run through my mind but they will never be our reality. And truth be known, we are all pretty darn happy with how our lives currently are, but it's nice to have those sentimental thoughts every now and then.

Alex and I took a mini vacation to Innsbruck, Austria and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany while the little guy stayed back with "Gaga" and "Mo". My mom got a great laugh from the list I printed for her on how to care for Brecken. I'll confess, I have control freak tendencies at times. It had been over a year since Alex and I had an overnight without B and it was so nice to be "off duty" for those 36 hours. We came home to a child who didn't acknowledge our arrival, a clean house, and dinner in the oven. At that, we both agreed we need to hire an au pair if my Mom isn't willing to live in our attic. ;)

This week the house felt empty with our guests back in Florida and Daddy back to work. Brecken has been running around yelling "Gaga, Mo, Daddy!" .. Sorry buddy, it's just Mom here and no one is going to save you from your nap.
